You need to be able to:
  • Identify characteristic as environmental, inherited or both
  • Understand and apply the terms; "chromosome, gene, allele, dominant, recessive, genotype, phenotype, dominant, recessive"
  • Construct and use genetic cross diagrams for gender determination, family pedigrees of inherited disorders and for inherited characteristics (e.g. eye colour)

B1e Drugs and You

You need to be able to:

  • Explain the classification of drugs (harmful/beneficial/prescription, legal classification with examples and effects, stimulants/depressants with examples and what they do to the synapses)
  • Explain how smoking causes health problems (CO2, nicotine, tars, particulates, particular focus on the cause of smoker's cough)
  • Explain the effect of alcohol (short term, long term - particular focus on cirrhosis, social impacts - data analysis)

B1d The Nervous System

You need to be able to:

  • Explain how the eye works (focus near and far, functions of each part, how long/short sight can be corrected, advantages and disadvantages of monocular and binocular vision)

  • Describe reflex and voluntary action (reflex arc, spinal reflex, synapses)

B1c Staying Healthy

You need to be able to:

  • Explain how infectious diseases are spread including examples (pathogens, parasite, host, malaria, vectors, how symptoms are caused, contolling the spread)
  • Explain and evaluate immunisation (passive, active, action of antibodies, benefits and risks)
  • Describe the use of antibiotics and anti viral drugs, and explain how new drugs are tested

B1b Human Health and Diet

You need to be able to:
  • Explain a balanced diet (and why it varies from person to person), and how carbohydrates, fats and proteins are stored in the body
  • Describe the role of protein in the diet (including why teens need high protein, what protein deficiency is and why its common, what protein is used for in the body, calculating EAR for protein, explain why EAR for protein will vary, classify proteins)
  • Calculate and understand BMI measurements, and link these to obesity and other poor diets

B1a Fitness and Health

You need to be able to:
  • Explain what blood pressure is and the consequences of high and of low blood pressure
  • Explain and evaluate different ways of measuring fitness
